Three keys to success. Servers, servers, and servers.

This web site is hosted on a rack mounted iMac running AppleShare IP over ADSL.

How do you respond to those who say you shouldn't host your own web site?

Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Even if you only have two computers in a little home office, you need a server. If your family has more than one computer, you need a server. If you plan to be successful in business, you need a server- probably more than one.

A server is a computer that stores information for all of the other computers on your network.

Most people don't like to use servers because they think of them as computers that aren't being used because no one actually sits in front of it. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Here are some examples of how servers are used.

At home - a place to store all the MP3 song files so everyone in the house can access them.

At work - a place to store all of the files so that when you backup the server, everyone's files are backed up.

On the Road - a server safely connected to the Internet can allow staff to do work away from the office.

Most people use servers and don't realize it. When you visit a web site, you are communicating with a web server.

Good servers make all of the other computers on your network perform better.

IT was difficult to use this system because there was no room to sit down in front of the rack, and the keyboard and mouse were crowded onto an equipment shelf. The servers were stacked on top of one another on the floor, which created a ventilation problem and made it difficult to take a server out for servicing. There is no patch panel or central network switch to monitor workstation activity. The KVM switch was also crowded behind the keyboard. All in all, not a presentable or manageable installation.   It goes without saying that this configuration of almost the same components with the inclusion of a patch panel, switch, rack mounted KVM switch, and Keyboard/Mouse shelf, is a more presentable and manageable system. But more than aesthetically superior, this configuration makes troubleshooting a breeze, servicing an efficient proposition, and daily use a pleasure. Over time, this configuration will pay for itself multifold.
