SUCCESS STORY: Don’s Truck Rental

Don Carpenter is a super nice guy who rents trucks and other equipment to the small farmers in Waipahu.  He had an old program that printed invoices onto pre-printed 4 part NCR forms using a dot matrix printer.  His computer died so he got a new one with Windows Vista.  The old program wouldn’t run on Vista.

Don found me in the yellow pages.  My name is the only listing under the category “Software Programming.”  I didn’t even know I was in the yellow pages.  I got there because I ordered enhanced call forwarding for businesses and it came with a free listing.

Don called one day and explained his situation.  I suggested that the fastest and cheapest solution to replace his old program was for me to create a new one, host it on my server, and have him connect to it over the Internet.  That way I wouldn’t have to drive to Waipahu and install it on his computer and he wouldn’t have to worry about backing up the data.  The other advantage was that I would be able to make modifications and additions to the form on the fly without any down time.

Don agreed and faxed me the NCR form so I could scan the layout and place fields in the proper location.  Within a couple of weeks he was back in business.  The initial programming cost him $400, and he pays $400/year for hosting and support.

Don calls about one a month to have changes made to the form.  I can usually make the change while he’s on the phone.  He can see the change immediately on his computer.

The program that made this all possible is FileMaker Pro.  He bought a copy for his computer so that he can connect to the invoicing database, but he’s hardly aware or concerned with what the underlying software is. 

Bottom line, the next time his computer dies, all he has to do is get a new one and reconnect to his invoice system.  He can also connect multiple computers to his invoice system from anywhere in the world, but that’ll come later as his business grows.
